Ladyhawke (musician)

Ladyhawke is the alter ego of solo musician Phillipa "Pip" Brown (born c. 1981), formerly of the Wellington band Two Lane Blacktop and the Sydney duo Teenager with Nick Littlemore of PNAU. Noted as being influenced by 1980s music, Ladyhawke is best known for the 2008 single "Paris Is Burning", which she wrote after a visit to Paris. The debut album was released on Modular Recordings in September 2008.

Biography

Originally from Masterton near Wellington, she came from a musical family, with her mother being a singer and her stepfather, a drummer. Brown herself began as a percussionist in the town's brass band which her stepfather led, and she now plays more than ten instruments. She spent some of her music career in Sydney, but is now based in London.

Ladyhawke named herself after the Rutger Hauer film Ladyhawke. Peaches, to whom Ladyhawke's music has been compared, remixed the single "Paris Is Burning", and the two have performed together, with Peaches taking DJ duties. Ladyhawke's music has also been likened to that of Cyndi Lauper, Pat Benatar, Annie, and New Young Pony Club.
