Vikatan was started by S.S.Vasan in 1928 when he purchased a humour magazine that was not doing well for Rs. 200. The first issue Working hard, he built it up into a weekly and soon the weekly scaled to the top and the best selling Tamil magazine Ananda Vikatan is still running successfully after nearly eighty years.
Vikatan has now evolved as Vikatan group and became an icon in the Tamil Nadu magazine industry. Vikatan over the years has provided the opportunity for many great Tamil writers such as Kalki Krishnamurthy கல்கி கிருஷ்னமூர்த்தி, Devan தேவன், Sujatha (சுஜாதா), Kalaimani Kothamangalam Subbu கலைமணி கொத்தமங்கலம் சுப்பு and Nadodi நாடோடி, to name a few.
Now Gnani (ஞாநி) and Madhan (மதன்) are some of the well-known contributors to Vikatan.
According to the Audit Bureau of Circulation, for the period of July-December 2004, the circulation stood at 4,30,534 per week. This represents a 22 per cent growth over the previous half-year period.
Interesting Writings from S. Ramakrishnan , S. P. Jaya Gaandhan and many other laurates of the kind add flavour to the readers. Vikatan Cartoon , usually it mocks/brings out the current situation in the Country/State/People , is another feather to the Crown. People Usually don't miss this. Malligai Kilamaigal is now a big hit among the readers. This was preceded by another series of poetry named Naalai Matrumoru Naalae. That too was a big hit.
Sujatha has written a column called Katrathum Petrathum for the last 6 to 7 years. Sujatha writes on science, Tamil literature, Chennai's glitterati, and other world happenings with his unique and interesting style. He has said, "After my 45 years of Tamil writing, I might be even remembered for the Katrathum Petrathum Column." nice article thank u
