Amador Guerrero, Manuel

Amador Guerrero, Manuel, 1833-1909, first president of Panama (1904-8), b. Colombia. A physician, he served as medical officer for the Panama RR and was a leader in the movement for Panamanian independence from Colombia. As the emissary (1903) for the revolutionaries to the United States, he helped obtain U.S. aid for the successful revolution. He was unanimously selected president of the new republic by the constitutional convention despite a stipulation in the constitution that the president be born in Panama.
The Orden de Manuel Amador Guerrero (Order of Manuel Amador Guerrero in English) is the highest honour of Panama.

It is named after Manuel Amador Guerrero, the first president of Panama. The order was established on the 50th anniversary of Panama's independence on 29 October 1953, and has been awarded to distinguished people (Panamenians and Non Panamenians) in the sciences arts, and politics for over 50 years.
