AlterNIC was an
alternative DNS root founded by
Eugene Kashpureff. Kashpureff was
arrested on wirefraud charges in November 1997 related to the re-routing of the DNS listing for
InterNIC to Alternic's website for two weekends in a row. Kashpureff fled to Canada, where he was arrested. After fighting extradition for two months, he waived his rights, and was extradited to New York City. He was released Christmas Eve, 1997, and sentenced to five years of
probation. AlterNIC is currently defunct, and
alternic.net is
parked and no longer associated with AlterNIC.
