9-11 (comics)

9-11 (comics)

9-11 comics emerged following the terrorist attacks in New York City, Washington DC, and Pennsylvania on Tuesday, September 11, 2001, and cartoonists turned to art to express their grief and support.

History

Two comic book volumes were coordinated as a two-volume set by mainstream comic book companies: 9-11: September 11, 2001 (Artists Respond), Volume One was coordinated by Dark Horse Comics, Chaos! Comics, and Image Comics; 9-11: September 11, 2001 (The World's Finest Comic Book Writers & Artists Tell Stories to Remember), Volume Two was organized by DC Comics.

Marvel Comics produced three charity books, Heroes, The Amazing Spider-Man #36 and A Moment of Silence. Heroes was a book of sixty-four full-page illustrations paying tribute to those who attempted to save lives on 9-11. The profits from sales of the comic went to 9-11 based charities. The Amazing Spider Man #36 explores how Spider-Man and other Marvel characters like Captain America, Daredevil, Doctor Doom and Magneto react in the aftermath of the attacks; and A Moment of Silence features four wordless stories reflecting different perspectives on September 11th, all inspired by true events.

9-11: Emergency Relief was published by Alternative Comics. The book features the talents of people from the alternative comics medium, with all of the profits from the book donated to the American Red Cross.

I Love N.Y. Benefit Book was created entirely by Joe Linsner through his company Linsner.com. It presented the perceptions of Linsner, a native New Yorker, on that day.
