O'Connor Hospital is a hospital operated by the Roman Catholic Church in San Jose, California. It was founded in 1889, and was the first hospital in Santa Clara County, California. O'Connor Hospital was built by Judge Myles P. O'Connor and his wife, Amanda. The original hospital was built on fifteen acres of property on the corner of Race Street and West San Carlos Street.
The O'Connors were very well known as being benefactors of many charitable organizations. The O'Connors' first thoughts were to build an elderly home, however the demands of the community at that time was for a hospital. Patrick Riordan, Archbishop of San Francisco, suggested that a hospital should be built. The O'Connors then asked the Daughters of Charity to operate the hospital. Four Daughters of Charity moved into the facility on May 1, 1889.
"In 1953, O'Connor Hospital moved to its present site on Forest Avenue. Still affiliated with the Daughters of Charity Health System, the hospital continues to provide care with a special focus on the needs of the poor and underserved.
Mission Statement: O'Connor Hospital's mission is to support the sick and the poor. A religious based non-profit organization, Jesus Christ is O'Connor Hospital's model. Providing healthcare that is caring and thoughtful to patient needs of body, mind and spirit.
Values of St. Vincent:
Mr. Curry is the President and Chief Executive Officer of O'Connor Hospital since March 2003. He has 25 years of hospital administration experience.
Mr. Curry was with Banner Health System as President and Chief Executive Officer of Thunderbird Samaritan Medical Center in Glendale, Arizona for 13 years. The medical center received many awards and was named one of America's Best Hospitals in the July 2002 edition of U.S. News & World Report. All because of his outstanding leadership.
Mr. Curry's experience also includes 9-years with Western Reserve Care System in Youngstown, Ohio.
Mr. Curry graduated magna cum laude from the University of Pittsburgh with Bachelor of Science degrees in both Economics and Accounting and a master's degree in Health Administration.
During Mr. Curry's time as CEO, the hospital has faced several financial wind falls, and has had to cut back services offered to Santa Clara County. It has been argued that his success at O'Connor has at best been mediocre with several departmental directors asking as to why his resignation has not been asked for.
During the fiscal year of 2007, O'Connor hospital proposed deep cutbacks into the staffing levels of UHW union members. This created significant controversy in the bay area, as the hospital management had no planned cutbacks for the staffing of CNA(nursing union) union members. In what became a drawn out union fight to preserve the jobs of almost 100 union members, an agreement was reached to reorganize the hospital in December 2007.Although many layoffs were avoided, hospital management would put off committee hearings to extend the UHW collective labor agreement in May 2008, in order to obtain rights to make layoffs easier for the organization.
