Main-belt Asteroid discovered on
February 20,
2002 by
B. L. Stevens at
Desert Moon Observatory. It is named in honor of John L. Jones (1927-2006), an observational astronomer from Bellwood (and later Schaumburg), Illinois. Jones served as President of the Chicago Astronomical Society, general chairman of the annual Astrofest star party, and was also a regular lecturer at the
Cernan Earth and Space Center,
Triton College.
